Individual and Family therapy

Family therapy is as much a philosophy as it is a method of treatment. I believe that individuals are strongly affected by their social network, and that individuals are best understood in the context of their family and social relationships. While marital, couple, and other close relationships can be a source of support and comfort, they can also contribute to stress, anxiety, and depression, but with persistence change for the better is almost always possible. Many people also experience stress or trauma outside the family setting; often, part of recovery involves mobilizing family and/or friends to be part of the healing process.
I will work collaboratively with you to help set individual and/or relationship goals in treatment and progress toward these goals.

Family mediation and conflict resolution:

My mediation practice is oriented towards helping families resolve conflict. Although many people think of conflict as a negative thing, it is a normal part of life and can lead to positive changes, including growth and understanding. I work with clients in two ways: one is to mediate between the client and the other person or people who are involved in the conflict. The other is to assess the conflict style of either an individual or a couple and then to work with them to develop a new process for them to better handle conflict in their lives.

I have worked with:
  • couples
  • parents and children, including stepchildren, adolescents, and adult children
  • individuals
  • families experiencing elder care issues
I do not do divorce mediation.
